Virtualbox 3d acceleration games

Hyper-V is the Windows Server para-virtualization interface. With this interface enabled, it improves the speed of execution of Windows guests on Linux hosts. KVM is the interface for Linux kernel virtualization. With this interface enabled, it improves the speed of execution of Linux guests on Windows hosts. That is, do not enable the Hyper-V interface if you are emulating a Linux guest on a Linux host. But if you are emulating a Windows guest, it is this interface that you should enable.

The Hyper-V interface is recognized by Windows 7 and above. In Windows XP it may work, but 7 is currently more supported. The next step is to set up the video card for the Windows guest. Do as shown in the figure below with MB the maximum that VBox currently supports. Once these settings have been done, turn on the virtual machine and press F8 to enter safe mode.

After the machine has booted, in the VirtualBox devices bar, click "insert guest additions disk" and start installing guest additions.

If all went well, you can now install DirectX9C and enjoy good accelerated games on the Windows virtual machine you own. You won't likely find "Virtualbox" in the list. But you can press the "Add" button, and add virtualbox. Once you have added it, in the settings below make sure that item 2. Don't set it to auto, and certainly don't set it to integrated. Of course, you need the VM settings set with the 3D acceleration box ticked, and you need the guest additions installed on the host.

But once you have set the host video 3d settings as described above, shutdown the guest VM, exit virtual box, and then re-launch virtualbox and the VM. If you use task manager performacne and look at the "virtualbox manager" process and watch what GPU gets used when you navigate the guest VM's UI, you should see it using the better GPU now.
